The Brown Berets Started In East Los Angeles Around The Time Of The East La Blowouts.In 1967,A Group Of Student Garfield High School,And Lincoln High School Started To Meet Together.They Called Themselves The Young Chicanos For Community Action.This Group Wanted Better Education In School And To Be Treated Better At Schools.In 1968,The Group Transformed Into The Brown Berets.Also In 1968,The Students Started Organized Walkouts To Protest The Schools.The Brown Berets,Led By Two Students,Carlos Montes And David Sanchez,Protected The Protesting Students From Police That Had A History Of Beating The Students.Carlos Montes Had Previously Lived In South Central,And Worked Closely With The Black Panthers.He Set Up The East La Free Clinic For Heathcare And A Breakfast Program That Was Similar To The Black Panthers.The Brown Berets Also Worked With Fred Hampton In Chicago.The Group Tried To Take Over Catalina Island,But Started To Fall Apart Because Of Division In The Group.

In The End,34 People Died.118 People Suffered Gun Shot Wounds.Most People Were Killed By The LAPD And National Guard.There Was Over $40 Million In Damages. After The Riots White Fights Occurred.Thousands Of White Residents In The Area Around Watts,Such As Compton,South Central, And Inglewood,Left Los Angeles In Fear.Many Black Resident Left Watts To These Other Areas

In The End 53,People Were Killed,Most All Were Rioters Or Innocent Victims.Over $1 Billion In Damages Were Done.People Rioted Because Of The Built Up Anger And Frustration Of Recent Events.Riot Also Occurred In San Francisco,Oakland,Las Vegas,Seattle,And Chicago.The Riot Were Not Just A Collection Of Random Acts.People Were Speaking Out Against Oppression,Against Being Held Down For So Long.The Only Way They Were Finally Heard Was Through The Extreme Acts That Came To Call La Riots?

The Los Angeles Area Was Originally Home To The Tongva And Chumash Indigenous People For Thousands Of Years.The Spanish Arrived In 1542 When Juan Cabrillo Visited The Area.They Did Not Come Back Until 1769 When Gaspar De Portola Led An Expedition Across Southern California With Catholic Monks Junipero Serra And Juan Crespi.Porla Named A Beautiful River They Discoverd El Rio De Nuestra Senora La Rina De Los Angeles De Porciuncula The River Of Our Lady The Queen Of The Angels Of The Porciuncula Meaning Little Portion Juan Crespi One Of The Monks Had Picked Out A Site Along The River For The Spanish Mission.The Mission Was Cancelled Though And One Was Built In San Gabriel Instead.On September 4,1769 44 Mexican Settlers Set Out From The San Garbiel Mission To Establish A Town At Juan Crespi Porciuncula River Site.Of These 44 People Documents Show That Nearly Half Were Full Mixed African And The Other Half Were Indigenous People Of Mexico.The Town That Founded Was Named El Pueblo De Nuestra Senora La Rina De Los Angeles Sobre El Rio Porciuncula The Town Of The Lady The Queen of The Angels On The River Poriuncula.It Remianed A Small Ranch Town For Decade.Today The Outline Of The Pueblo Is Preserved In A Historic Monument Area Called Olvera Streets.Mexico Independence From Spain Was Achieved In 1821 Greater Change Took Place After This.Americans Gained Control Of The Area After They Flooded Into California Becoming A State In 1851 Soon After The Mexican American War.Pico Pico Was First Governor Of  California.His Family Came From Those 44 Original Settler.He Was Mixed Black In Indigenous.Los Angeles Was Incorporated As A City In 1850.Railroads Arrived When The Southern Pacific Completed Its Tracks To Los Angeles In 1876.Some Of The First Railroads Connected The Harbor At San Pendro To DownTown Los Angeles.Oil Was Discovered In 1892 And 1923 Los Angeles Supplying One -Quarter Of The Worlds Oil.Even more important To The City Growth Was Water.In 1913 William Mulholland Completed The Canals That Assured The City Growth But Left Was Dozens Of Neigboring Communities Without Water Supplies Of Their Own.
